An Intensive Design Workshop in New York City, August 2009

This is intensive design workshop from August 17-21 in New York City. The workshop will take place in a studio setting and will be devoted to exploring relational design strategies and digital design methodologies for speculative infrastructures--specifically with the Gowanus Canal.
The aim of the workshop will be to empower designers to negotiate the complex and data-rich environments that are available through professional mapping and information systems and to develop speculative design proposals through the use of computational techniques and methodologies. Participants will develop design interventions that address emerging ecological crises and opportunities found in New York ecologies of the present and near-future.
Workshop participants include students, academics, and professionals, and the program includes a number of interesting outside speakers and events. The instructors are Michael Chen + Jason Lee [Crisis Fronts] & Ronnie Parsons + Gil Akos [Studio Mode | modeLab].
There is still time to register for the full workshop. A public event and presentation on Friday the 21st will conclude the workshop.

One week of design on the lucky island: October 19 through 25, 2009

The Island of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, sounds like a pretty compelling place to go for a design festival with it's stunning landscape and distinct local culture, not to mention the climate and proximity to mainland Europe... but not too close. Between the 19th and 25th October, 2009, the Tenerife Design Festival will present exhibitions, workshops, urban interventions, prizes, conferences, etc.
While decidedly international character, showcasing a selection of renowned designers and creators from all over the world, the festival will also feature local craftsmen and creators. The festival will highlight design with the resources available in Tenerife, encouraging the development of new products through experimentation with local materials. The overall goal is "to demonstrate that design is an essential and unstoppable tool in any culture, society and economy" though multidisciplinary means. The festival is broken down into five interconnected areas--see more below. I'm in... given the discretionary income and vacation time to be there, of course!

North America’s only multi-discipline non-traditional design show

Are you ready?! The 6th incarnation of the CA Boom Design Show in Los Angeles is coming. As y'all know, we've offered the most comprehensive CA Boom web coverage since the very first show. And this year we just might have a few tricks up our sleeves. For starters, we will have FREE tickets to give to some lucky L+L readers... and as usual we will have a discount code for pre-purchased tickets. Stay tuned for details.
This year the show moves to a new larger location in Beverly Hills at the former Robinsons flagship Department Store (a very cool mid-century building) which provides almost double the exhibition/event space.
The show floor will be divided into distinct zones: international design manufacturers, national & limited production manufacturers, studio furniture, modern parenting, modern prefab, indoor/outdoor living, building accessories, and surfaces & finishes.
The Design Conference speakers series will again provide some nice depth to the show.
And of course the highlight, at least for us, are the home tours. Fifteen different houses will be featured, Case Study House #22 (aka the Stahl House) in the Hollywood Hills designed by Pierre Koenig is THE tour this year. One of the original family members will be on site for you to chat up, and part of the proceeds for this tour will go to Stahl Foundation for maintenance and restoration of the property. Very nice.

MoMA Exhibition

The exhibition, running at MoMA in New York City from April 8, 2009–September 14, 2009, draws from the rich collection of The Museum of Modern Art to examine the diverse attitudes toward landscape over the last hundred years.
I saw a sneak peak of the exhibit before it opened a couple of weeks ago, and what I saw left me wanting to see more. Featured designers include Roberto Burle Marx, Frank Lloyd Wright, Hans Hollein, Diller + Scofidio, Tadao Ando, Mies van der Rohe, Bernard Tschumi, Enric Miralles, and many more.

Woah... that was fast...
In fact, Day 3 went by so fast that we missed one of the houses on the tour... Oy vey! We did walk through the other four examples of nouveau LA living, and there is plenty to observe and say about these abodes.
Here's the breakdown (with the skinny after the jump):
No gallery: Mi-Ca Residence
Jesse Bornstein Architecture
Gallery: Ocean Park Housing Michael Folonis and Associates
Gallery: Santa Monica Prefab Office of Mobile Design
Gallery: House of Sand Lee + Mundwiler Architects

CA Boom V Saturday filled with familiar faces... and some cool houses.
Has the suspense gotten to you yet? At long last, we put you out of your misery. And the bling was worth the wait... lots of picture galleries for you modern home loving peops.
Day 2 of the guided home tour takes us around West Los Angeles and it feels sorta like homecoming. It just so happens that Neil Denari, Chris Genik and Kevin Daly all instructed some of us at SCI-Arc years ago, and nothing like getting those boys back for the countless sleepless nights they made us spend cutting basswood and atomizing onto mylar we say, so let’s have at it.
Gallery: Alan Family House Neil M. Denari Architects, Inc.
Gallery: Red Barn Prefab MXA Development
Gallery: Anderson Residence Jesse Bornstein Architecture

Our CA Boom V coverage begins (FINALLY!!)
CA Boom V follows in a tradition of providing sensory overload to design professionals and aficionados alike (hint: the architects are normally the tired looking folk, since the wardrobe no longer reveals anything apparently), and this edition did not let anyone down in that respect.
Unfortunately for us (and for you), we were unable to go on the architecture tour on Friday, so there is no coverage of that excursion.
Fret not, since we provide you with links to all the architecture offices involved (after the jump). You will have to imagine our witty banter and myopic architectural insight when perusing the web sites of the participating architects, but, let’s face it, you like the pictures best anyway.
